Belt stripes

Turning stripes on, each belt's maximum, awarding and correcting stripes, and why turning them off deletes nothing.

Stripes — degrees, on a black belt — are the small steps within a belt: tape or embroidery on the belt's tip. A blue belt with two stripes is still a blue belt. Dojo Tiger tracks them as a count on the student's current belt, separate from the belt itself, so your belt ladder stays one rank per belt and your promotion reports still count promotions only.

Stripes are off for every studio until an owner or admin turns them on. With them off, nothing about stripes appears anywhere in the app.

Turning stripes on

Studio then General → Belt Stripes → tick Track stripes (degrees) on belts. Only owners and admins see this setting.

Once it is on:

  • belts show as a bar in the belt's colour with a black tip — red on a black belt — carrying one white tick per stripe;
  • Students then Ranks gains Add stripe buttons, and the Promotion History tab becomes Rank History;
  • each belt in Belt Configuration gets a Max stripes setting.

Turning stripes off deletes nothing

Off only hides stripes and stops anyone awarding them. Every student's stripe count and every stripe in the history stays where it is, and all of it comes back the moment you turn the setting on again.

How many stripes each belt takes

Students then Ranks → Belt Configuration → the pencil on a belt → Max stripes. The ladder shows each belt's maximum as max 4 under its colour.

  • 4 is the default for every belt, which is right for most BJJ ladders.
  • 0 means the belt takes no stripes: no Add stripe button, and the bar has no tip. Setting every belt in a program to 0 opts that whole program out — useful for, say, a kids' karate program at a BJJ academy.
  • Up to 10, for black belt degrees. The BJJ preset sets Black to 6 when stripes are on.

You can't lower a belt's maximum below a count a student already holds. You'll see, for example, "2 students on Blue have more stripes than this; adjust them first". The app never quietly removes a student's stripes to make the number fit.

Awarding a stripe

On Student Ranks, Add stripe on the student's row opens a panel with their current belt and stripes, and a counter that starts at one more than they have. Add a note if you like, then press Award Stripe. Notes are visible to the student's family, so keep them to what you'd say to the student.

When a student already has their belt's maximum, the button reads Stripes… instead. There is nothing left to add (promote them to the next belt instead), but it still opens the panel, on their current count, so a mistake can be fixed.

After class, for a group

Filter to the program, tick the students, and press Add Stripe (n) next to Bulk Promote. Everyone gets one more stripe on their own current belt, with one shared note. As with bulk promotion, you need a program filter first, and up to 100 students can be done at once.

Anybody already at their belt's maximum is skipped and listed by name, and everybody else still gets their stripe.

Two coaches, one tap each

If two instructors both press Add stripe for the same student after class, the student gets one stripe, not two. The second coach sees "This student's rank changed since the page was loaded" and can refresh to check.

Fixing a mistake

Open Add stripe (Stripes… for a student at the maximum) and use the minus button to go below the current count. The panel labels this a Correction and the button becomes Save Correction. The change is kept in the history, marked as a correction, so nothing is silently rewritten.

Belt promotions reset stripes

Promoting a student to a new belt always starts them at 0 stripes on that belt. The stripes they earned on the old belt stay in the history.

This happens even while stripes are turned off, so that a student's old-belt stripes never reappear on their new belt when you turn stripes back on. If your studio has never used stripes, this makes no difference at all.

Rank History

With stripes on, the third tab on Students then Ranks shows promotions and stripes together, newest first. A stripe row reads Blue · 1 → 2 stripes, with a Correction tag when the count went down. The All Types filter narrows the list to Belt or Stripe changes only.

A busy studio's history is long, so it opens on the most recent stretch and says how far back it goes: Showing the most recent history, back to …. Press Load more for the next stretch. Every stretch shown is complete, with both promotions and stripes, and the filters apply to what is loaded.

Who can award stripes

Exactly the same people who can promote:

  • Owners and admins — any student, in any program.
  • Instructors — only in programs they teach, and only for students enrolled in that program. See The instructor view.

Families can see their child's stripes, but can never change them.

Students who already have stripes

When you add a student by hand on Students then Students → Add student or Bulk add, there is a Current stripes field next to Current belt rank while stripes are on. Like the starting belt, this records where the student already is. It is not shown in the history as an award made today.

Where stripes show

With stripes on, the stripe bar replaces the plain colour dot wherever a student's rank appears:

ScreenWhat it shows
Students then RanksEach student's bar, plus the per-row and bulk Add stripe buttons.
Students then StudentsThe Belt column, as a bar.
The student's detail pageTheir bar in each program.
The attendance sheetEach student's bar in that class's program.
The family viewTheir child's bar, plus the count in words, e.g. 2 stripes.

Promotion reports and milestones count belt promotions only. Stripes are not included in them.
