Setting up the kiosk

The tablet, the URL, the PIN, the two unlock layers, and the check-in codes students use.

The kiosk is a tablet by your door that students check themselves in on. It is a full-screen app at its own address, deliberately separate from the admin app, and it has two locks — one for the device, one for staff actions — that do different jobs.

This article is the setup. What a student actually taps is What students see at the kiosk.

What you need

  1. A tablet — any device with a browser.
  2. Your kiosk URL.
  3. Your kiosk PIN.
  4. A schedule, so there are classes to check in to.
  5. Students with active enrollments in those programs.

The two locks

Device lock and staff re-auth are different things

The device lock is the screen a fresh tablet shows: "Enter Kiosk PIN". A member of staff enters the PIN once and the tablet stays unlocked for students to use themselves. It is not a login, and it identifies nobody — it exists so the kiosk cannot be opened by anyone who happens to know your studio's web address.

The staff re-auth is behind the small Staff link in the top-right corner of the student screen. It asks for the same PIN again and opens a staff-driven flow: pick a class, then tick people off the roster. That is the mode for the front desk checking in a queue, or for a student whose code is not working.

The PIN and the URL

Both live on Studio then GeneralKiosk Mode.

ControlWhat it does
Kiosk PINShown as dots with a Show / Hide button.
Update PINType a 4 to 6 digit number and press Save.
Generate New CodeMakes a random 6-digit PIN and saves it immediately.
Kiosk URLYour kiosk address, with a Copy button.

The URL is /kiosk/your-slug, built from the URL Slug on the same page. The sidebar also has a Kiosk item under Studio then Kiosk that opens it in a new tab.

Changing the PIN signs out every tablet

The PIN is part of what keeps a tablet unlocked. Change it — or press Generate New Code — and every device currently unlocked with the old PIN drops back to the lock screen the next time it does anything.

That is the feature, not a bug: it is how you deal with a tablet that has been lost, or a staff member who has left. Just remember to go and re-unlock your own tablet afterwards.

Treat the PIN as a staff credential. It should not be written on the tablet stand.

Setting the tablet up

  1. Copy the URL

Studio then GeneralKiosk ModeCopy next to the kiosk URL. Send it to yourself and open it on the tablet.

  2. Unlock it once

The tablet shows your logo, your studio's name and "Enter Kiosk PIN". Enter the PIN. You land on the student check-in screen.

  3. Lock the tablet down

In the tablet's own settings, add the kiosk page to the home screen or turn on guided access / screen pinning so students cannot browse away from it. Dojo Tiger cannot do this for you — it is a device setting.

  4. Set the screen never to sleep

A kiosk that has gone to sleep is a kiosk nobody checks in on. Turn off auto-lock and keep it on a charger.

The unlock lasts 12 hours, so a tablet unlocked before the first class of the day is unlocked for the whole day, including through a page refresh or a reboot. Somebody has to enter the PIN once each day.

If the tablet drops back to the lock screen with "Session expired — please re-enter PIN", that is the 12 hours running out or the PIN having been changed.

Check-in codes

Each student has a personal 6-digit check-in code. It is on their student page — Students then Students → the student → Check-in code — shown as dots with Show and Regenerate buttons.

Families can see their own children's codes in the family view, which is the practical way to distribute them: tell parents to look it up rather than handing out slips of paper.

Regenerate issues a new code immediately and invalidates the old one. Use it when a code has been shared around or a student keeps typing somebody else's.

Codes are unique within your studio. A student who has forgotten theirs can search their own name at the kiosk instead — nothing is blocked by a lost code.

Kiosk rules worth knowing before you set it up

  • Check-in opens one hour before a class starts and closes when it ends. Outside that window the class is not offered, and the kiosk says why.
  • Only today's classes appear. There is no checking in ahead.
  • A student can only check in to a class in a program they are actively enrolled in — or one they have a trial booking for.
  • A check-in is a Present record on that class's attendance sheet, marked as coming from the kiosk. Staff can change it afterwards like any other row.
  • Nobody can check in twice to the same class.

Turning the kiosk off

There is no on/off switch, and no way to hide the kiosk URL. It is a public address protected by the PIN, so choose a PIN you would be comfortable protecting a door with.

To stop a kiosk being used, press Generate New Code and do not unlock any tablet with the new PIN. Every device drops to the lock screen on its next action and stays there.
